The right moisturizer for eczema

Anyone can get eczema but it most often appears during infancy.  Using the right moisturizer can help but it is also important to understand other things that can cause flare ups including getting too hot or sweating, harsh soaps or detergents, or contact with fresh fruit juices, meats and dust mites.  If a flare up of eczema occurs, the application of a non-prescription corticosteroid cream or moisturizer can reduce inflammation.

If you have eczema, use a moisturizer to keep your skin soft and flexible to prevent cracks.  Try and use a product that doesn’t contain fragrances as this can irritate your skin.  A good alternative is plan petroleum jelly such as Vaseline.  You want to use a product that is greasy versus creamy products which usually have more preservatives.  In winter, multiple daily applications may be required.

If you do have a flare up of eczema, moisturize a lot, try and stay out of the water as much as possible, wear cotton clothing, stay cool and try not to scratch.  The good news is that it usually goes away before the age of 25.  If you do notice red, rash like patches on your skin, consult you doctor immediately to ensure you start the proper treatment.
